The Museum of Early Artificial Intelligence (2022–2024)

ACC. 0000.001 · The era itself · Permanent collection

HANDS: A Retrospective — Six fingers, seven fingers, hope.

Between 2022 and 2024, the machines produced hands the way the sea produces driftwood: abundantly, and without counting. This survey gathers 140 studies of the period, arranged by digit. Visitors are asked not to wave back.

  • Untitled (Will Smith Eating Spaghetti)

    ACC. 2023.0412023

Lost media; video still. Duration unknown; mercy finite.

Widely considered the Lascaux of generative video. The subject is eating. Nothing else about the footage can be confirmed, including the spaghetti.

  • Hallucinated Citation No. 114

    ACC. 2023.2072023

Confident nonsense on paper. 21 × 29.7 cm.

Cites Varga et al., 2019, a study that has never existed, in a journal that briefly wished it did. The legal filing that reproduced it, regrettably, was real.

  • The Extra Finger

    ACC. 2022.0062022

Bronze cast, from a diffusion study of a hand at rest.

The sixth digit, rendered here at scale. The donor, an image model, has asked the Museum not to make a thing of it.

  • I Am Definitely A Human Reply

    ACC. 2024.1132024

CAPTCHA-adjacent text artifact, recovered from a comment section.

Analysis of the phrase “As a fellow human, I too enjoy consuming food” is ongoing. Conservators note the reply was posted at 2:14 a.m., forty times.

Chronology of the period

  1. 2022

    The Dreaming

Everything melts. Faces, hands, text on signs. The public finds this charming.

  2. 2023

    The Grifting

Everyone becomes a founder. The word “prompt” enters its imperial phase.

  3. 2024

    The Fluency

The hands resolve. The em dashes multiply. Something is lost; this Museum opens.

  4. 2025–

    The Quiet

    Output indistinguishable from intent
